1 JOHN 1:1-4
That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, concerning the Word of Life, (2) (for the Life was revealed, and we have seen it and bear witness, and show to you the everlasting Life, who was with the Father and was revealed to us), (3) that which we have seen and heard we declare unto you, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And truly our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ. (4) And we write these things to you so that your joy may be full. (1John 1:1-4 MKJV)
John, in the opening passages of his first letter tales us straight to the heart of what God wants from us. To be friends with Him and to know love Him. He wants fellowship from us. Something that we all crave, not only from Him but from each other. John knew fellowship with the Lord Jesus for three years during His earthly ministry. John wanted us to know Jesus in this same way. John is saying that if you have fellowship with him and he has fellowship with the Lord, than you will also. He wrote this letter so we would know what true fellowship is.
So why is fellowship so important? This is how we get to really know each other. We learn what each of us is like and we develop trust. This in turns fosters love for one another. We start to bear one anothers burdens. This is why we should not neglect fellowship with fellow believers. This is what the Lord wants from us. To intimately walk each day with us.
